General science

Nature (IF: 42.351, 2013)

Topics: Nature is a prominent interdisciplinary scientific journal. It was first published on 4 November 1869. It was ranked the world's most cited scientific journal by the Science Edition of the 2010 Journal Citation Reports, is ascribed an impact factor of approximately 42.4, and is widely regarded as one of the few remaining academic journals that publishes original research across a wide range of scientific fields. Nature claims an online readership of about 3 million unique readers per month. The journal has a circulation of around 53,000 but studies have concluded that on average a single copy is shared by as many as eight people.Research scientists are the primary audience for the journal, but summaries and accompanying articles are intended to make many of the most important papers understandable to scientists in other fields and the educated public. Towards the front of each issue are editorials, news and feature articles on issues of general interest to scientists, including current affairs, science funding, business, scientific ethics and research breakthroughs. There are also sections on books and arts. The remainder of the journal consists mostly of research papers (articles or letters), which are often dense and highly technical. Because of strict limits on the length of papers, often the printed text is actually a summary of the work in question with many details relegated to accompanying supplementary material on the journal's website. There are many fields of research in which important new advances and original research are published as either articles or letters in Nature. The papers that have been published in this journal are internationally acclaimed for maintaining high research standards.

Autonomous Robots (AURO) (IF: 2.066, 2014)

Topics: The primary goal of Autonomous Robots is to report on the theory and applications of robotic systems capable of some degree of self-sufficiency. Thus the journal is aimed at the growing trend in robotics toward mobility intelligence and autonomy in an unstructured world. This trend has been made possible by small inexpensive high-performance computers. The term 'robot' implies that the systems described here are capable of performing purposeful behaviors in the real world. They obtain inputs from the world through sensors and act upon the world through actuators. The connection between sensing and actuation may be simple signal processing or it may involve complex decision making goal interpretation and other aspects of reasoning. Most autonomous systems display some form of mobility: on land under water in the air or in space. The mobility may make use of wheels legs fins rotors or other actuators. The focus is on the ability to move and be self-sufficient not on whether the system is an imitation of biology. Of course biological models for robotic systems are of major interest to the journal since living systems are prototypes for autonomous behavior. Autonomous robots must be able to perform in the world. Hence publication preference will be given to papers which include performance data on actual robots in the real world. Papers which include only simulation results will be considered for publication but with a lower priority. Such papers should also include a section entitled 'The path to implementation' where the transition from simulation to real world is discussed. Papers published in these pages will report on original research in such areas as: Control of autonomous robots Real-time vision Autonomous wheeled and tracked vehicles Legged vehicles Computational architectures for autonomous systems Distributed architectures for learning control and adaptation Studies of autonomous robot systems Sensor fusion Theory of autonomous systems Terrain mapping and recognition Self-calibration and self-repair for robots Self-reproducing intelligent structures Genetic algorithms as models for robot development.

Frontiers in Theoretical and Philosophical Psychology (IF: 2.6, 2014)

Topics: Psychological science and the philosophy of mind are natural partners, if only because these disciplines have joint custody over some of the most daunting — and most exciting — questions that humanity ever dared to contemplate. This partnership is too precious to be treated casually: arguably, the most consequential theoretical advances in psychology are typically motivated by deeply philosophical considerations, and the best thinking in the philosophy of mind is the kind that is inspired by, and reflects back upon, scientific findings and theories. The specialty section of Theoretical and Philosophical Psychology offers an open-access forum for interdisciplinary scholarly conversation about the nature of minds, which aims to promote intellectual rapport between scientists and philosophers who study them. Authors are encouraged to reflect broadly on psychological findings and theories and indulge in thought experiments and conjecture. Critiques, reviews, opinions, and reasoned manifestos might come from any field in psychology, philosophy of mind, and philosophy of science. Contributions that connect multiple disciplines, as well as "third culture" syntheses that transcend the traditional "two cultures" division between sciences and the humanities are especially welcome.

Topics: Frontiers in Cognitive Science publishes theoretical, experimental, methodological and applied papers on the study of the mind. It covers all aspects of cognitive science: ranging from pre-attentive sensory processes to intentional executive control and its relations to the philosophy of the mind. The method of inquiry may include behavioral testing, neuroimaging, genomic analyses and detailed computer simulations of cognitive processes at various levels of description, including single-neuron level, symbolic system level and interactive agents. Empirical work should be of high standard and directly related to how, when and why the human mind works. Neuroimaging work is encouraged, but we also welcome submissions that have a very clear brain-behavior connection; the dependent measures should include behavioral measures in addition to neuroimaging measures and directly relate the two. This holds equally for studies investigating the genome-behavior connection. As a reflection of the multidisciplinary field, they consider submissions that include analyses of behavior in cognitive non-human agents, emergent cognitive behavior in groups, and cross-cultural comparisons. Cognitive science has a rich history of developing new methodologies to tackle the finer-grained research questions. They are particularly keen to receive submissions that show how they can bridge the different levels from genome to neuron to behavior. This includes new methodologies for model development, selection and evaluation. As part of a continuing development within the field of cognitive science, contributions showing the utility of cognitive models in society at large and written for a multidisciplinary audience are particularly encouraged. Apart from being a research outlet, Cognitive Science will also publish commentaries and theoretical discussions on the history and philosophy of cognitive science that reflect on today’s research questions and outcomes.

Topics:  By making connections through the application of computational methods among disparate areas of biology, PLOS Computational Biology provides substantial new insight into living systems at all scales, from the nano to the macro, and across multiple disciplines, from molecular science, neuroscience and physiology to ecology and population biology. PLOS Computational Biology is an official journal of the International Society for Computational Biology (ISCB). PLOS Computational Biology features works of exceptional significance that further our understanding of living systems at all scales—from molecules and cells, to patient populations and ecosystems—through the application of computational methods. Readers include life and computational scientists, who can take the important findings presented here to the next level of discovery. Research articles must be declared as belonging to one of the following categories: General, Methods or Software. Software articles form a specific sub-category. More information about Software articles can be found in the submission guidelines. Research articles should model aspects of biological systems, demonstrate both methodological and scientific novelty, and provide profound new biological insights. Research articles with limited novelty may be more appropriate for PLOS ONE. Generally, reliability and significance of biological discovery through computation should be validated and enriched by experimental studies. Inclusion of experimental validation is not required for publication, but should be referenced where possible. Inclusion of experimental validation of a modest biological discovery through computation does not render a manuscript suitable for PLOS Computational Biology. Research articles specifically designated as Methods papers should describe outstanding methods of exceptional importance that have been shown, or have the promise to provide new biological insights. The method must already be widely adopted, or have the promise of wide adoption by a broad community of users. Enhancements to existing published methods will only be considered if those enhancements bring exceptional new capabilities.

Topics: Frontiers in Cellular Neuroscience is a multidisciplinary open-access journal devoted to better understanding the cellular mechanisms underlying the functions of the cells composing the nervous system (neural and non-neuronal) across all species. The past years have seen exciting progress in this area because of the merging of traditionally separate fields such as anatomy, physiology and molecular genetics. We welcome submissions of multidisciplinary studies of cellular function in vertebrates and invertebrates, in cell culture, in vivo, or using slices, and involving genetically amenable species, such as Drosophila, C. elegans, mice, and zebra fish, as well as any other species suited to elucidate fundamental principles of cellular function in neurons. Studies on basic neural functions, such as the generation of action potentials, synaptic transmission, biophysical and biochemical aspects of receptor activation, ionic channel functions, synaptic plasticity, intra- and inter- cell signaling related to the emergent functions of cells, glial-neuronal signaling and synaptic and dendritic integration, are welcome. An important frontier for the journal is to address issues at bridge between molecular/cellular physiology and integrative neuroscience, so as to understand the impact of cellular/molecular properties of neurons on circuit functions and behavior. Frontiers in Cellular Neuroscience will devote special attention to novel technical approaches able to shed light on yet unresolved neuroscientific issues. Frontiers in Cellular Neuroscience also publishes research on the morphology of cells and how these morphologies relate to the emergent functions of neurons. This journal also welcomes research focused on the developing adult and ageing cell, as well as cellular changes in diseases. While the relationships of submitted papers to the hippocampal formation will be evaluated liberally, the substance of appropriate papers should deal with the hippocampal formation per se or with the interaction between the hippocampal formation and other brain regions. The scope of the journal is wide: single and multidisciplinary experimental studies from all fields of basic science, theoretical papers, papers dealing with hippocampal preparations as models for understanding the central nervous system, and clinical studies will be considered for publication. The Editor especially encourages the submission of papers that contribute to a functional understanding of the hippocampal formation.

FRONTIERS IN BEHAVIORAL NEUROSCIENCE (IF 4.16, 2014)

Topics: Frontiers in Behavioral Neuroscience is an open-access journal that aims to publish major insights into animal and human behavior, in order to better understand the neural mechanisms underlying behavior. Our journal welcomes papers concerned with the interplay between behavior and neurobiological analysis at all levels: from molecular biology and genetics, to morphological, biochemical, neurochemical, electrophysiological, neuroendocrine, pharmacological, and neuroimaging studies, as long as they contribute to unravel the neurobiological basis of behavior. Frontiers in Behavioral Neuroscience welcomes work in all animal species, including humans, and integrative and translational approaches combining animal and human research are encouraged. In recent years, translational work has proved to be particularly suitable to address topics and questions related to psychopathology, with outstanding examples showing how animal studies can help identify key genetic mechanisms of behavioral deviation in humans and, conversely, how innovative findings in humans are directing essential work in animals. Our ultimate goal is to accelerate the progress in this research area at a critical time when we are facing multiple challenges: from the need to integrate findings obtained at different levels of analysis to the constant redefinition of topics and approaches that concern and characterize the field of Behavioral Neuroscience. Authors submitting manuscripts other than Original Research should highlight in their cover letter how their publication record on the same topic has prepared them for contributing to the field. We also request that prospective organizers of Research Topics (info at www.frontiersin.org/about/RTGuidelines) provide the Editorial Office (neuroscience.researchtopics@frontiersin.org) with their CV and clarify in the proposal how their research expertise qualifies them to organize a Research Topic on that particular subject.

FRONTIERS IN NEURAL CIRCUITS (IF 2.95, 2014)

Topics:Frontiers in Neural Circuits is devoted to understanding the emergent properties of neural circuits - the elementary modules of the brain. A flagship member of the Frontiers first-tier electronic journal family, it received an initial impact factor of 5.098 (2011) and remains a "central watering hole" for research in neural circuits, serving the community worldwide to share data, ideas and inspiration. Articles revealing the anatomy, physiology, development or function of any neural circuitry in any species (from sponges to humans) are welcome. Our common thread seeks the computational strategies used by different circuits to link their structure with function (perceptual, motor, or internal), the general rules by which they operate, and how their particular designs lead to the emergence of complex properties and behaviors. Submissions focused on synaptic, cellular and connectivity principles in neural microcircuits using multidisciplinary approaches, especially newer molecular, developmental and genetic tools, are encouraged. Studies with an evolutionary perspective to better understand how circuit design and capabilities evolved to produce progressively more complex properties and behaviors are especially welcome. The journal is further interested in research revealing how plasticity shapes the structural and functional architecture of neural circuits.

The new official journal, Child's Nervous System (CNS), although primarily devoted to pediatric neurosurgery, has been expanded to encompass all aspects of the pediatric neurosciences: development and growth, degenerative disorders, hereditary diseases, neurology, neuro-oncology, neurophysiology and trauma. The format of the papers published in CNS vary according to the specific goals of the authors. Original Papers report the results of laboratory or clinical studies. Technical Notes introduce new surgical modalities or variants of existing techniques. Case Reports describe unusual or rare clinical experiences. Brief Communications offer authors the opportunity to publish focused papers aimed at illustrating specific, significant, personal experiences or at anticipating important preliminary results of ongoing research. Case-Based Update papers aim to review the current management of a specific nosographic entity on the basis of a sample clinical case. On the other hand, Case for Discussion papers deal with cases that pose problems in terms of physiopathogenetic interpretation or treatment options. These papers will be discussed and commented on by experts selected by the journal. Review papers offer exhaustive information on a given subject. The Editor will invite experts in the various fields of neuroscience to publish Invited Papers.
Original manuscripts are given priority for publication; the same applies to Brief Communications. Individual case reports are welcome but, if accepted for publication, the "lag-time" before appearance in print may well exceed 7 months from the time the final manuscript is received by the appropriate geographic editor until the time it is published. However, faster publication is possible for individual case reports that may generate discussion (Case for Discussion papers) or that provide an update on the status quo of a rare subject (Case-Based Update papers). A given issue may contain assigned and submitted critiques of current and previously published papers, book reviews, and letters to the editor. Suggestions regarding ways to improve Child's Nervous System are both solicited and welcome.

NETWORK-COMPUTATION IN NEURAL SYSTEMS (IF 0.870, 2014)

Topics: The tremendous technological advance of experimental methods in neurobiology over recent years has generated extensive data sets about the activities of many neurons in parallel. These data describe collective neuronal processing to a level of detail that only several years ago would have been considered impossible by many researchers. We now have the ability to do multielectrode recordings of extracellular spiking from over a hundred neurons in parallel; further, two-photon microscopy allows parallel intracellular calcium imaging of even hundreds of neurons. The leading labs presently strive to bring these techniques into behaving animal research and to further increase the number of recorded single cells - and even cellular compartments.
These developments pose an enormous challenge to theoretical neuroscientists. On the one hand more efficient data analysis methods are required to harvest the full potential of these recordings. On the other hand these data allow a new way of envisioning and validating computational models of neural systems. The networks in the brain now are understood to evolve from an abstract computational entity to experimentally tractable dynamical systems. The possible implications of this are significant, potentially slowly closing the gap between microcircuits and large scale signals as EEG or MRI.
Network: Computation in Neural Systems aims to publish theoretical neuroscience research that is driven by experimental data, with a particular focus on such new technologies. Papers are welcome from both the data analysis and the biologically motivated modeling perspective.
The articles should rest on a solid mathematical background and be accessible to neurobiologists, psychologists and cognitive scientists.

FRONTIERS IN INTEGRATIVE NEUROSCIENCE (IF: does not have it)

Topics: Frontiers in Integrative Neuroscience is focused on synthesizing multiple facets of brain structure and function to understand how multiple diverse functions are integrated to produce complex behaviors. Our goal is to publish research related to furthering the understanding of the integrative mechanisms underlying brain functioning across one or more interacting levels of neural organization. In most real life experiences, sensory inputs from several modalities converge and interact in a manner that influences perception and behavior. The journal is therefore focused on the primary questions of how multiple sensory, cognitive and emotional processes merge to produce coordinated complex behavior. It is questions such as this that cannot be answered at a single level – an ion channel, a neuron or a synapse – that we wish to focus on. In Frontiers in Integrative Neuroscience we welcome in vitro or in vivo investigations across the molecular, cellular, and systems and behavioral level. Research in any species and at any stage of development and aging that are focused at understanding integration mechanisms underlying emergent properties of the brain and behavior are welcome.

FRONTIERS IN DECISION NEUROSCIENCE (IF: does not have it)

Topics: The section aims at publishing important theoretical and empirical contributions to the understanding of animal and human decision making. Decision Neuroscience is the convergence of neuroscience and decision sciences, such as psychology, economics and statistics. It spans a large range of sub-disciplines including, among others, animal neurophysiology, computational neuroscience, affective science, behavioral neuroscience, social neuroscience, game theory, behavioral decision making, behavioral economics, neuroeconomics, neurology and psychiatry. All of these sub-disciplines investigate how decision makers acquire perceptual or other information about decision options in a social or non-social context, and further process this information to obtain different kinds of rewards. Over the last 10 years, decision neuroscience has been growing at an exponential rate. We will provide a forum for research spanning all areas of decision neuroscience in all animal species, including humans, using a research approach such as 1) behavioral, brain stimulation, functional neuroimaging, EEG, MEG, neurobiological and pharmacological experiments; and 2) lesion, structural neuroimaging, genetic and computational studies.
