Short profile:

Virginia Volterra served as Director of the Institute of Psychology of the CNR (1998-2002) and she is currently associated to the Institute of Cognitive Science and Technologies in Rome. She has an international reputation in many areas of research concerned with language and a solid experience in research management. In June 2008 she was named Honorary Fellow of University College London. She pioneered sign language research in Italy collaborating extensively with deaf as well as hearing colleagues. Throughout her career she collaborated widely with researchers in Europe and the USA in relation to sign language and language development in children with learning disabilities associated with specific syndromes (Williams and Down syndrome).
She has also explored gestural communication in typically developing children and in children with limited access to models of spoken language, providing insights into the role of gesture in early language development and in the evolution of human language. More recently, she is involved, with the Neuroscience Department of University of Parma, in a project aimed to explore more deeply the tight link between actions, gestures, and words in young children acquiring spoken and/or sign language. At present, she is the coordinator of one ISTC CNR Research Unit for the Leonardo project DEAL TOI aimed to teach foreign languages to Deaf students with the support of Sign languages
